The data revealed opportunities for improvement: cross-functional collaboration was at 57%, resource allocation at 61%, and stress management at 65%. As a fully remote organization spanning multiple time zones and cultures, they had a chance to deploy innovative ways to strengthen connections across their ever-expanding team.

The Solution

ABC Fitness developed a comprehensive strategy centered on connection and collaboration. They launched seven integrated initiatives:

  • A multi-directional meeting framework featuring monthly team sessions, quarterly town halls, and DEBI sessions to connect team members
  • A comprehensive communications approach designed to meet team members where they are and equip them with the information that they need to be successful in their roles. The approach leverages five core channels, including Slack, live-virtual engagement events, surveys, email, and their one-stop ABC Connect hub
  • Continuous feedback channels with quarterly pulse surveys and Leadership AMA (Ask Me Anything) forums with Executive Leadership team
  • Recognition programs spotlighting peer nominations through everyday Core Rewards, quarterly ABC Impact Awards, and annual Club Excellence Awards
  • Global connection challenge (Best Life Games) uniting 14 countries across 12 time zones. The Best Life Games exemplified their approach to connection, engaging 186 employees across three languages in friendly competition using their own ABC Trainerize app
  • Innovation hackathon that generated 28 new ideas from global 194 participants
  • A 10-week mentorship program matching 68 leaders with 108 team members

The Impact

ABC Fitness’ December 2024 survey demonstrated the positive effects of this strategy. Cross-functional cooperation rose 3%, while leadership relationships showed strength — 91% of employees felt comfortable approaching leaders with ideas or concerns, and 95% reported respectful treatment from managers.

The global hackathon united 194 participants across departments, while 22 regional events created local community bonds. When describing their workplace culture, employees consistently highlighted five qualities: inclusive, innovative, collaborative, supportive, and diverse.
